Appearing to float among the trees, the award-winning, historic Balogh House in Plymouth awaits a new owner β for the first time, one outside the family that built it in the late β50s.
Located at 49800 Joy Rd., the two-story cubed home has two bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths and its decked out in redwood. Within its 1,905 square feet, the home includes high-ceiling living spaces, an open floor plan, and countless other mid-century modern design features. The home is listed with John Goetz of Real Estate One-Ann Arbor/Plymouth for $750,000.
Beyond the entranceβs living space on the first floor is an open kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Down the staircase, which connects each level of the house, thereβs an unfinished basement conjoined with the newest addition to the home: An extra living room space with large windows that provide an expansive view of the 2.7-acre woodlands that surround the estate. In its initial design, the home was supported by a partial basement on one side and support posts on the other side, which gave it its iconic βlightness.β This open space underneath the house, which was once used for parking, has since been filled in to create the new living space. However, the home still continues to create the illusion of hovering among the trees. The second floor contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a concrete covered seating space with another view of the forest.
Detroit born Tivadar Balogh, an architect and professor at University of Michiganβs College of Architecture, designed the namesake home for him and his family. He won a Progressive Architecture Award in 1957 for the renderings of the home, which completed construction in 1959. And, just over 50 years later in 2013, the Balogh House was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
