Come fall, splotches of red, yellow, brown, and auburn tint the treelines and embellish the picturesque views of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Located 15 miles west of Ontonagon in the Upper Peninsula, the 60,000 acres of land affectionately dubbed βthe Porkiesβ make up Michiganβs largest state park and encompass the stateβs only officially designated wilderness. As the leaves grow coarse and fall from the trees, hikers can crunch through 87 miles of recreational trails ranging from 1 to 17 miles. In addition, 21 miles of mountain biking trails promise the challenge of rugged terrain as well as the prospect of wildlife observation.
Nestled within a pocket of forests in the shadows of the Porcupine Mountains is the Lake of the Clouds. Each autumn day ends with a finale best experienced via an accessible boardwalk off of the 107th Engineers Memorial Highway. As the sky melts into warm shades and as the sun descends, light streaks further emblazon the fall colors.
