Explore the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela at the newest temporary exhibition at The Henry Ford Museum, . It is the first time the exhibit has stopped at a museum in Michigan.
The display features more than 150 historical artifacts and personal effects of the activist and politician that have never been seen outside of South Africa, on loan directly from the Mandela family, museums, and archives around the world.
Among these items are the suit Mandela wore for the opening of the South African parliament in 1996, a headdress gifted to him by The King of the Xhosa people, his presidential desk and chair, the iconic beige trench coat, and more.
Guests of the museum will learn about his life in rural Transkei, through his struggle against apartheid, and his term as South Africa’s first Black president. The exhibit also “reflects on his passing after a lifetime of service to others, his legacy and the impact of his values and commitment.”

This exhibition is truly an inspiration and aninspired effort; I believe that everyone who sees it will agree that the legacy lives on and that the dream will never die.”
Mandela: The Official Exhibition opened at The Henry Ford Museum on Oct. 21, 2023, and will be on display through Jan. 15, 2024. General admission is $30. Admission for seniors is $27 and kids 5-11 are $22.50. Kids under 4 are free.
