Dino��& Dragon Stroll

Last year, the locally founded Dino��& Dragon Stroll held its inaugural event at Canterbury Village, before going on to tour around North America. Now, it’s bringing its prehistoric��creatures home for the weekend to show metro Detroiters what it was like when the world’s largest creatures roamed the earth. Participants in this outdoor, walk-through experience will encounter life-like dinosaurs, including a t-rex, a velociraptor, and a stegosaurus — plus dragons —��that move, breathe, and even roar. Some of these life-size animatronics stand over 28 feet tall and 60 feet long. Dino��& Dragon Stroll encourages guests��to bring foodstuffs, which will be donated to Lake Orion’s Village Food Pantry as part of the event’s Stomp Out Hunger initiative. $27+. May 19-29. The Mountaintop

The Mountaintop opens on room 306 of The Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. prepares to retire for the night after delivering his final speech — now known as “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” — in Memphis, Tennessee. There, he is visited by a beautiful and mysterious maid and learns he is living his final night on this Earth. The Olivier Award-winning play blends history with current events to paint a dynamic and vividly human portrait of the irreverent larger-than-life figure. $47. May 19-June 18. The Offspring

Since forming in 1984, The Offspring has become one of the best-selling punk rock bands in history, with more than 40 million records sold worldwide, and are often credited with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the 1990s. Endangered Species Day at the Detroit Zoo

As part of its Party for the Planet event series, the Detroit Zoo will host a special Endangered Species Day event full of education and engagement. Visitors will find out what they can do to help the Detroit Zoological Society save animals from extinction, from cleaning up the environment to building sustainable habitats. The event will feature specialized “ed-zoo-cation” stations, talks with animal care experts, and resources to help guests continue caring for the planet. May 20. No cost with zoo admission. Metropolis

As part of its Silents at the Senate series, the Senate Theater presents a restoration of the German science fiction classic Metropolis with live organ accompaniment.��Set in a futuristic urban dystopia, the 1927 film follows the unlikely team of wealthy politician Freder and an activist named Maria on their fraught crusade to dismantle the social barriers of their city and unite the working and ruling classes. In addition to being lauded for its powerful imagery and beautiful set design, Metropolis is widely considered to be one of the most influential films ever made. $12+. May 21. In Front of Your Face

Each Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the DIA partners with local cultural groups to showcase various forms of AAPI art. This year’s programming includes showings of the 2021 South Korean film In Front of Your Face, which screened as an official selection at the Cannes and New York Film Festivals. Celebrated South Korean actress Lee Hyeyoung returns to the big screen as the lead in this intimate and surprising portrayal of art as resistance to mortality. $9.50. May 21 and 22. The Great American Songbook

This weekend marks the final performance of the Michigan Philharmonic’s 76th��season. The Great American Songbook concert will feature a litany of classics from icons like Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington.��Selections will include Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” Bart Howard’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow,” and Jule Styne’s “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” The symphony will be accompanied by the smooth vocal stylings of pop and jazz singer Suede. In addition to touring as a solo artist, Suede is the first and only female member of the world-renowned a cappella group The Flirtations, seen in Jonathan Demme’s film Philadelphia. $70. May 21.
