Freep Film Festival

The Detroit Free Press’s eighth annual documentary festival kicked off Wednesday and will continue throughout the weekend, with more than 40 screenings and filmmaking events throughout metro Detroit. The lineup features both feature-length films and shorts, such as Who You Gonna Call? The Ray Parker Jr. Story and Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale.��This year’s attendees will experience a number of festival firsts, including free selected showings, outdoor screenings, and virtual streaming availability. Smokey Joe’s Café��

The Encore Musical Theatre is kicking off its latest season with the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history, Smokey Joe’s Café. Audience members will find themselves dancing in their seats to the Grammy-winning score of instantly recognizable pop, rock, and R&B standards like “On Broadway,”��“Fools Fall in Love,”��“Hound Dog,”��and “Jailhouse Rock.” $44+. Rapper NF will return to his home state of Michigan to perform hits from his latest��project, Clouds (The Mixtape), at DTE Energy Music Theatre. Earlier this year, the mixtape became his third consecutive release to debut among the top-three on the��Billboard��Top 200 chart. Dlectricity

The outdoor celebration of light and art known as Dlectricity will take over Detroit’s Cultural Center area this weekend, featuring works from more than 40 local, national, and international artists. Funky Ferndale Art Fair

The annual Funky Ferndale Art Fair is not your typical juried show. In addition to the usually high artistic standards, these jurors are looking for art that stands out from the crowd. This makes Funky Ferndale the perfect show for those craving something a little bolder, edgier, and more unorthodox.��In addition to irregular takes on traditional art forms —��like painting, sculpture, and jewelry —��the fair will feature art that’s completely outside the box, including the works of one artist, who creates images from taxidermied insects and butterflies. Shirley Woodson: Why Do I Delight

Throughout her six-decade career, Detroit artist, educator, and Kresge 2021 Eminent Artist Shirley Woodson has been represented in collections across America, including at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Harlem’s Studio Museum.��Why Do I Delight��celebrates Woodson’s range and progression, from the muted tones of her early paintings and collages to the richly colored canvases for which she become known for. The exhibition also features tribute works from some of Woodson’s protégés, including Peter Crow, Kimberly Harden, Najama Ma’at, Dwight Smith, Beverly Watson, and Elizabeth Youngblood. Hasan Minhaj

Comedian and first-generation American Hasan Minhaj got his big break as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a role he continued with new host Trevor Noah until 2018. He has since hosted the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, produced Netflix special Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King, and created and hosted Netflix’s Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. That show has been honored with Peabody, Emmy, and Television Academy awards.
