Detroit City FC (DCFC) has advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals of the United Soccer League Championship playoffs after a 1-0 win against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday in front of a 6,000-plus crowd at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.

The win was a major upset against the Riverhounds, who were the top overall seed in the league, as Detroit City was eighth seed and had only qualified for the playoffs after the final game of the season had been played.

Dominic Gasso, a product of the DCFC academy, scored the one and only goal of the match from approximately 22 yards in the 78th minute after an attempted shot from Yazeed Matthews, which came off a freekick from Connor Rutz, was blocked.

Gasso’s shot soared past two Riverhounds players and their keeper into the back of the net. It was the 20-year-old’s first-ever professional goal.

Pittsburgh ramped up the pressure for the last 10 or so minutes of the match, plus five minutes of stoppage time, but was unable to get anything past City keeper Nate Steinwascher (who was named one of the 2023 ΒιΆΉ·¬ΊΕ Detroiters).

With the end of the match, Pittsburgh’s season was over, and DCFC had won their first USL Championship playoff match.

Detroit City will travel to Louisville, Kentucky this weekend for the semifinal match against Louisville City FC, who narrowly defeated Memphis 901 FC on Saturday during penalty kicks.
