No matter how you serve it up, in a bowl or in a cone, with toppings or on its own, when it comes to ice cream, nothing beats fresh. Step out of the freezer aisle and check out one of these locally made frozen treats.

After an extensive taste test (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it), the ΒιΆΉ·¬ΊΕ Detroit team crowned Big Bang Ice Cream the overall winner on the basis of creaminess, texture, and flavor. It was a close call, with the other ice cream makers earning nods for consistency, creaminess, most unique flavors, and more.


Ray’s Ice Cream: Founded in 1958, this perennial ΒιΆΉ·¬ΊΕ Detroit Best of Detroit winner and local favorite serves up over 50 different flavors, including a White Russian ice cream and Michigan Cherry sorbet. Vicecream: Matt Tulpa, a personal chef who founded Salt & Saffron, will be debuting an ice cream food truck with partner Omar Anani. Their sweet treats go beyond chocolate and strawberry with β€œchef-inspired flavors” like black sesame with nori and yuzu sugar topping. For more on Tulpa and Vicecream, see sidebar. Vicky’s Homemade Ice Cream: The Redford scoop shop is known for their unique flavors such as cantaloupe, banana pudding, and black walnut, all made fresh in-house. The Detroit Ice Cream Co.: Lakisha Burns makes premium homemade ice cream, and with flavors like Livernois Lillie’s Lemon, RenCen Red Velvet and Cream, and Vernor’s Cream, it’s easy to see where she pulls her inspiration. While available only online at the moment, Burns hopes to open a brick-and-mortar location in the city.

Big Bang Ice Cream: As the name suggests, this pop-up ice cream joint takes a bit of science to their cream. Using premium liquid nitrogen, Tom Poyma creates intensely dense and creamy ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet. While there’s no brick-and-mortar location, Big Bang is available for events and parties and can be found at various Detroit events and pop-ups.ΜύΜύ * Overall Winner
