Top Metro Detroit Moments at the 2023 Grammy Awards

These moments during the annual music awards show have a connection to the Motor City, and we love it.

The on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, celebrated some of the biggest names and voices in music with big names like Harry Styles, Bonnie Raitt, Samara Joy, Adele, and others taking home wins.

Two jazz recording artists with Detroit connections, Terri Lyne Carrington and duo Wayne Shorter and Leo Genovese, took home Grammys and three artists from Michigan were nominated for awards. Those artists were Diana Ross for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album; Ron Carter for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album; and Lizzo for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Lizzo, who was born in Detroit, was the only one of the three to win an award, and walked away with Record of the Year for her album, About Damn Time β€”Μύher win, and speech .

In addition to these nominees, and Lizzo’s win, our Mitten State was also represented in these four other ways during the show.

Lizzo’s Red Carpet Dress

Lizzo’s award was one of three moments that impressed viewers. Her second was her bold, bright look. This Detroit-born artist donned a showstopping β€œcitrus” corset gown made by Dolce and Gabbana that featured silver details and a β€œcascading floral appliquΓ© opera-length coat with matching nails and fingerless gloves.”

Madonna’s New Face Μύ

The β€œQueen of Pop” made waves on social media after taking the stage to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith for their song Unholy with what some called β€œ.” Some viewers expressed concern while others went so far as to say that she messed up her face.

The 64-year-old was raised in Pontiac and Auburn Hills (now Rochester Hills) and graduated from Rochester Adams High School before attending the University of Michigan. She has yet to respond to the criticism.

A Motown Reunion

Motown legends with country singer and songwriter, Chris Stapleton, and R&B vocal group WamMor for a performance in celebration of Berry Gordy, Jr.

Berry Gordy, Jr. founded Motown in Detroit back in 1959, and was recognized at the MusicCares Persons of the Year Gala. Robinson was also recognized during that event.

Awards for Jazz Recordings

Two jazz recordings with ties to the Motor City took center stage during the awards ceremony.ΜύNew Standards Vol. 1Μύby Terri Lyne Carrington, the artistic director for the Carr Center in Detroit, won the Best Jazz Instrumental Album, while saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Leo Genovese took home the Best Improvised Jazz Solo for their trackΜύEndangered SpeciesΜύfrom Shorter’s albumΜύLive at the Detroit Jazz Festival.Μύ

Lizzo’s β€œSpecial” Performance Μύ

Along with her award and show-stopping dress, Lizzo wowed the crowd again at The Grammys with , melded with her popular song,ΜύAbout Damn Time.Μύ

SpecialΜύcame off her fourth studio album of the same name, which dropped in July of last year.
