Relive your summertime trip to Mackinac Island with a new beer with Michigan roots. Tomorrow, Founders Brewing Co. is releasing its KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge, a new variation of its Kentucky Breakfast Stout that features notes of coffee, maple syrup, chocolate, and bourbon.

β€œWe’d been trialing it for a while and kind of fell in love with it,” says Jeremy Kosmicki, head brewer at Founders. β€œWe’ve gotten a lot of good responses from it β€” people enjoy the style.”

The brewing process for the 11 percent ABV stout starts with Mackinac Island fudge-flavored coffee and maple syrup. Those ingredients are combined with the flavors found in Kentucky Breakfast Stout β€” a full-bodied beer that features vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee flavors β€” and the brew is aged in an oak bourbon barrel. β€œI tried to just pick a couple flavors that accepted the flavors in KBS, like coffee,” Kosmicki says. β€œThis year I really wanted to feature chocolate… I wanted that rich, sweet flavor.”

KBS Maple Mackinac Island Fudge will be available at Founders’ Detroit and Grand Rapids taprooms starting Oct. 8. The Michigan brewery will release the beer in stores across the country in 12-ounce, four packs later this month. KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge will only be available while supplies last, and Kosmicki suspects the fudgy feature may sell out as quickly as one to two months.

The new beer is part of Founders’ 2020 Barrel Aged Series. Other beers in that lineup include the original KBS, which is available year-round, and the KBS Espresso. The espresso stout, like KBS Mackinac Island Fudge, is a twist on the original KBS. The beer, which made its debut last November, will return to stores and Founders’ taprooms beginning Oct. 21.
