Remember , the national coffee chain that quietly disappeared without explanation from metro Detroit around 2013? This Monday, itβs making a return in Ferndale, and at the grand opening, beginning at 10 a.m., the first 100 customers will receive a free Caribou coffee mug, along with the chance to win free coffee for a year.
The location is the first near Detroit in about a decade. There will also be a downriver location in Allen Park opening next month, marketing director Jennifer Arnold said.
At just under 600 square feet, the βCari-blueβ- colored building will offer drive-thru and walk-up orders β but there wonβt be an indoor sit-down area. The menu will feature signature coffee drinks such as mochas, Caribou Coolers (Starbucks Frappucino-esque frozen flavored coffees), Caribou Bousted energy drinks, teas, and more. The locationβs normal hours will be 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. weekly.
The idea to bring Caribou Coffee back to Michigan was driven by Manna Development CEO Paul Saber, a native Michigander who Saberβs Coney Island in New Baltimore (now closed). Manna Development is a franchisee of Panera Bread and owns 25 Panera locations across Michigan. Caribou merged with Panera Brands in 2021, which also owns Einstein Bros. Bagels (all of which is owned by ).
In May, Manna Development it was opening over 50 Caribou Coffee locations statewide; the first opened in Battle Creek. Caribou Coffee was first founded in 1992 in Minneapolis and currently has over 750 locations around the world.
