Bedrock and the Carr Center are celebrating Black History Month with an exhibit made entirely by Detroit students. will be on display at , Feb. 1-29, 2024.
After a juried process, 23 student artists from 10 Detroit schools were selected to have their original artwork featured at the exhibit. Students were assigned to create artwork that embodies the theme, βAwakening: How will you shape, change, and reimagine our future?β
The students have created astonishing self-portraits, colorful paintings of places or landscapes, vibrant collages, and more. The gallery also offers lounge areas and a stage for other performances.
In addition to studentsβ artwork, the exhibit will feature works from emerging and established Detroit artists , , , , , , , , , and .
Throughout February, the space will also host weekly events to celebrate art forms such as quilting, film, fashion, poetry, and more.
Every Thursday, the exhibit will have piano performances, interactive singing performances, and live jazz with music and dance, and dozens of short films will be running each Friday from 4-8 p.m. for Film Fridays.
Kid-Friendly Saturdays will offer activities such community quilting and dance classes with provided materials and teachers. On Spoken Word Sundays, a variety of storytellers will recall the lives and careers of iconic Detroit artists, art communities, and more.
Admission to Celebrating Black Artists is free and open to the public from Thursday, Feb. 1 until Thursday, Feb. 29. The exhibit is open Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.Μύ
