Brooklyn-based rum expert and mixologist Shannon Mustipher made history when she debuted her book Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails ($30, Rizzoli) in March. In doing so, she became the first African American bartender in more than 100 years to author a cocktail book released by a major publisher. Now, sheβs bringing her talents to Detroit and stopping at tiki bar Lost River on May 2 for a cocktail pop-up and book signing.
Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails features Mustipherβs original cocktails, tasting notes, and style tips. It also contains recipes from some of the contemporary tiki cocktail industryβs most prominent names. At the Lost River event, Mustipher will be signing copies of her new book. Sheβll also show attendees how to prepare the tropical cocktails in its pages. One of the bookβs well-known drinks is the Parasol. The cocktail is a take on the banana daiquiri, which features pineapple juice and a garnish of freshly-grated nutmeg.
Mustipherβs tiki expertise β her writings and recipes have been featured in numerous publications, and sheβs acted as a bartender for Michelin-star restaurants β is in part why Matt Mergner, owner of Lost River, wanted to host an evening with her at the bar. βWe love her updated take on tiki and couldnβt wait to bring her to Detroit,β he says.
In partnership with Rizzoli and Source Booksellers, an independent bookstore based in Midtown Detroit, Lost River will also offer copies of Mustipherβs book for purchase at the event. Reservations are not required, and there is no cost for admission.
